Microsoft sells patents to Xiaomi
Microsoft, a well-known software maker is selling approximately 1,500 of its patents to Xiaomi, Chinese device maker. Undoubtedly, it appears to be a rare departure for the American company. The given move is expected to be the beginning of a long-term mutually beneficial partnership.
The deal officially announced on Wednesday, comes with a patent cross-licensing arrangement as well as a commitment by Xiaomi to install software program produced by Microsoft, including Skype and Office, on its tablets and smartphones.
Both companies refused to discuss financial terms of the given deal.
It’s very promising collaboration agreement between the two companies, as the senior vice president of Xiaomi, Wang Xiang told by telephone ahead of the deal.
Financial experts stressed Xiaomi's ambitions to become a key player outside China were mostly hampered by poor patent protection as well as a fear of a prolonged legal battle.
The deal might just provide Xiaomi with a long-awaited patent trove to head for Western markets.
